A Grateful & Happy New Year

It was mid-December and Amy was reading a magazine geared toward craft activities for families. One idea arose from a subscriber about a New Year’s Eve tradition that this particular family embraced. It was a gratitude box. Each day members of the family were encouraged to jot down something they were grateful for and place the piece of paper in the box. The notes would then be read on New Year’s Eve.

Feeling this was a great idea we began this exercise of gratitude for nearly three weeks. Jotting notes are easier some days than others. A day or two goes by and sometimes we forget to recall our gratitude. All in all, the box is filling up, and one day I decided to reach in and sneak a peek at a couple. I was touched by the simplicity of responses, and the detail of the littlest of things. I marveled and thought, “Oh yes, I am thankful for that too!”

How wonderful it will be to share our gratitude on New Year’s Eve as a practice of how we ought to live every day. If we do not express or share our gratitude it has no opportunity to be multiplied and dispersed. It was out of gratitude that the Wiseman gave of their gifts on that first Epiphany moment. They shared as an expression of gratitude they felt for being moved by something that was larger than them.

May this New Year be an expression of gratitude each day and may we then experience the multitude of blessings that come and return to us when we give something of ourselves.

God’s blessings to you this new year.
