Everyone who pays attention knows that appearances can be deceiving.

Dear Members and friends,

Everyone who pays attention knows that appearances can be deceiving.  Things are not always as they seem.

The Old Testament text for the coming Sunday is the story of the beginning of the reign of Israel’s third king – Solomon.  Solomon is renowned for his wisdom and our text recounts the occasion when he asked for that wisdom and when God granted it.

On the face of it, that’s a pretty lofty theme.  But the backstory to this text colors it in a way that we might miss.  There is a sense in which it’s hard to tell whether Solomon is saint or scoundrel.  Perhaps he’s a bit of each?

And isn’t that just a bit like you and me?  At first glance a story about someone as historically important as Solomon might not seem to have much to do with ordinary folk like us.  But I suspect there’s more relevance here for you and me than what we might casually imagine.  It’s this possibility that I’ll address on Sunday.  Join us!

Please keep Sandy Cloud and her family in your prayers.  Sandy’s husband, Lee (Leon) died a week ago and his funeral will be Sunday afternoon.

And Sunday, of course, is the Church Ice Cream social.  It’s about more than ice cream, of course.  It’s about good food, and good fellowship.  It’s about raising financial support for the church.  I look forward to seeing you there!

God’s blessings to each of you!
