Happy New Year!!

posted Dec 1, 2018, 5:07 PM by Cameron Hubanks

You probably are thinking, “Huh?”

Tomorrow is the first Sunday in Advent and the church year begins with Advent, so “Happy New Year” is an appropriate greeting for church people.

The better question to ask, of course, is about the meaning of Advent.  Before leaving the “Big Stories of the Bible” series for a few weeks, we’re considering the story of the crossing of the Red Sea.  It’s not a traditional “Advent” story.  But if Advent is about unexpectedly finding God in unlikely places and at unlikely times, then getting the Hebrews safely across (through?) the Red Sea is a very Advent-ish thing for God to do.

Even on a cold, rainy Saturday – most of us live lives unmistakably blessed by God – very much unlike that of the ancient Hebrews.  For that we should be thankful – and joining in worship is one way to do that.  Who knows, perhaps on the first Sunday in Advent, we’ll even encounter God!

In hope!
